Rev. J. Savory

We regret to announce the death, which occurred on July 13, of the Rev. J. Savory, s.3., who for over 39 years had been attached to the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Father Savory was a Breton, a typical son of that part of France, and was an enthusiastic patriot. He came to China in 1890, and for a time was attached to St, Xavier's College, and many of the older boys will remember him as an admirable teacher of Latin and French. Then he went to the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, where the esteem, love and respect which had been his when at St. Xavier's, not only continued but increased. Throughout the whole Catholic community he was a popular figure, while among the Portuguese section he was considered as something more than a friend, and there especially will his loss be deeply felt. Father Savory was a Doctor of Theology, and it is interesting to mention that he was an intimate friend of Bishop Paris. About two years ago he celebrated his 50th anniversary in the Society of Jesus, as well as his 30th anniversary in Hongkew Church.
