Severe Cold in the Trenches

Lieut, G. Butland writes from

France: We are back in 1p once more for a few days, and it is very cold—lots of snow and ice. I was mever so pleased to leave the trenches as we were nearly frozen stiff; fancy 11 days without tal off one's clothes. hen get out of the trenches we wonder how we ever managed to stick it, but we do, and keep remarkably well through it all, but most of us have an eternal cold. The poor men have s much harder time than the officers, do get the best that is going. I gave my platoon alittle treat of some extra grub and 1,000 cigarettes, and I tell you they think me some fellow.
