The Last Nautical Terms Known to the Landlubber to Dis appear by Order: Utilitarianism of the Present Day Even the landsman can see the eminent good sense displayed by the International Shipping Conference in approving the recommendation that the words "port" and "starboard" be substituted by "left" and fut," "or their ordinary national equivalents." Obviously, to put the matter very crudely, it is wiser, and less likely to lead to trouble in an emergency, to say left when one wants to go left, instead of saying port when one wants to go to starboard! But nevertheless, one cannot help feeling it a pity, that nautical terms, always a mystery and a joy, at any rate to those who know nothing of them, should be exchanged for words so ordinary, 30 completely and almost distressingly unromantic as "left" and "right"
