Mr. Huston Impressed with General Friendliness Exhibited in " Paris of the Orient"
In ai statement as to the impressions gained during his visit China, Mr. ©. H. Huston, U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce, said that Shanghai. was sometimes called the Paris of the Orient," for reasons which he could now well appreciate. Mentioning that America's friendship with China was, of course, of long standing, ho continued "I may say also that I have been particularly impressed by the fine spirit of ce-operation between the nationals of the many countries represented in Shanghai. It®* is rather as if you had here in one quarter of your city a sort of international city, where the nationals of many countries live together. The friendly way in which they get along and the fine spirit of cooperation shown speak for themselves in the results accomplished in the conduct of your municipal affairs. It is an object lesson that might well be taken to heart by the countries themselves, and if they did so and this spirit grew to world-scope, it would be a fine thing for the peace and prosperity of tha world."
