SHANGHAI'S OLD FRIENDS

Shanghai may legitimately pride itself on the fact that experience of its international atmosphere may quite possibly have been one of the qualiflcations which secured for the 1st East Lancashire Regiment the honour of Joining the Ist Essex Regiment in the {international police force on the Saar. The two East Lancashire Battalions were, in fact, together in Shanghai for few days in March, 1998, when the Ast, after its tour of duty here, was embarking for Catterick and relieved by its sister battalion. This meeting, of the two battalions had not occurred since they had been amalgamated into Jone regiment in 1881. The occasion, as will be remembered, was made the subject of special celebrations and the exchange of comradely courtesy be~ tween the two battalions. The ist Bast Lancashires were originally the Cambridgeshircs and earlier, the seth Foot, while the 2nd were the' Nottinghamshires, or 69th Foot, Shanghai recalls with pleasure the fine record of the East Lancashire Regiment here, It feels certain that both officers and men will perform their delicate "ous communities in this cosmopolitan City. Shanghat may not always attract Geneva's favourable attention; perhaps by the grace of the East Lancashires it may indirectly acquire some small degree of merit in the eyes of the League.
