Celebrated Matador Attacked

The Paris correspondent of The Times" states that the celebrated Spanish matador, Mendez, was gored and dreadfully injured in the first bull-fight of the season at Bordeaux when he fought three bulls. He placed a pair of bande-ullas in the first, when the bull charged him back and knocked to the ground. He was not serious ly hurt and he proceeded to despatch first this bull and then the second, amid the great enthusi-asin of the crowd who admired his almost reckless daring.

Mendez then faced the third bull, of which he had previously expressed his fear. The bull_charged forthwith and tossed Mendez and caught him on its horns as he fell. Mendez just managed to clamber to safely and fainted. He was gashed in the abdomen asd partially disembowelled, while internal haemorrhage set in from a severed artery. An immediate operation was performed in hospital, Mendez refusing an anaesthetic. His condition is critical.
