Waiting for the Gout

The truth is, human nature makes things too easy for the human soul. It accepts the standards of the common day, and is unprepared for demands of real Iie. Some people," said George Eliot, do not care about religion until they get the gout very bad."

But it would be a shame to be pushed into religion by physical infirmity. Life, is full of calls of a higher kind. Some truth one day stares in upon us: -some duty or opportunity knocks at our door: the bereavement of death may test the very foundations of faith. And for these demands that find us out a re ligion of mere habit is of small account. There is always an element of vigilance and venture in true religion, as if loins were girded and lamps lit. Nothing less will make us equal to life or ready for death.
