Schjoth took his early' training. in Norway, coming to China in 1868, With Mr. Daae, he was the first of the Norwegians to join the Customs service. He remained with them for 38 years, holding posts in north, weet, and south China, building reputation among his colleagues and thoee among whom be lived and worked that brought him permanent respect and admiration, and eventtually rising to the responsible position of Commissioner of Customs.
