VOLCANOES ACTIVE

Nagasaki, Sept. 2.

It is impossible to estimate the aggregate casualties in all the the affected districts but it is remembered that the great earthquake in 1856 killed over 100,000 people in Yedo alone. It is feared that the casualties in Tokio this time are greater.

Tt is reported that Fuji Spinning Mills near Mount Fuji collapsed and 8,000 operators perish-

At Hakone, the famous mountain resort, it is said to be easier to count the living than the dead. Prince Saionji, who was staying at Gotemba, took safe refuge in a bamboo grove nearby.

A number of volcanoes are reported to active.

At Yokohama there were again several shocks at one o'clock today. Tokio is still burning and explosions are frequently heard.

Nobody is permitted to enter Tokio unless carrying a sufficient supply of food for their own requirements.—Reuter.
