NEW YEAR HONOURS Sir Robert Clive and Sir Sydney

/Barton both receive promotion in the New Year Honours List. These awards naturally attract special attention and appreciation in the Far East where the Feeipients are so well. known and esteemed. Sir Robert at Tokyo and Sir Sydney at Addis Ababa have both had their share of diplomatic anxieties in recent months, His Majesty's ree= Jognition should therefore come to them as a welcome encouragement. Of the other honours mentioned by Reuter, Sir Philip Chetwode''s admis-slon {0 the extremely limited Order of Merit and Miss Christabel Pankhhurst's elevation to the rank of Dame of the Order of the British Empire will perhaps excite most interest. Sir Philip is the last of the War corps commanders to retire from active duty, although a Field Marshal never off the active list. He has proved himself a fine military administrator as well asa capable cavalry leader in the field, and statesman to boot. Dame Chris-tabd deserves. well of the modern irl whose privileges she did so much to secure. Women still find the fount of honour a little iggardly in their behalf but that makes the awards to Miss Pankhurst, Miss Myra Hess and Miss Olga, Nethersole—who has long deserted the stage for public welfare work—all the more welcome. Sir Gomer Herr ennoblement brings the third pera to his family. His eldest brother was made Lord Buckland in 1926, but, on his death in 1928, the barony became extinct. Their brother Wil-linin became Lord Camrose In 1929. With Lord Camrose, who. is also, Editor-in-Chief of the "Sunday Times" Sir Gomer Berry is joint Properictor of the "Daily Telegraph" '<a journal whose vigorous trad! ions have been given a modern vivacity in their hands. Airmen will applaud the knighthood bestowed on Colonel Francis Shelmerdine. Sir Francis has been a forceful Director of Civil Aviation during five years of marked progress.
