Bumper Trade in Opium

If good government could be brought in, what a task there would face it in the question of opium. The stocks accumulated since last spring's crop have not' yet been cleared away from the district. Much of it is still find-. ing its way down vid the railway to the coast. The trade this year has been a bumper one for all concerned in the opium and officials are filling their pockets.

Education is still being conducted at the two main centres of learning here viz: the Government Middle and Normal Schools and these institutions are doing good work. There have been changes in the teaching staff. These institutions have to be supported from government grants and sometimes they become financially embarrassed in their operations.. The city is recovering slowly from the disaster of last year. Many of the wealthy families are still at the coast places in foreign settlements: they prefer the assured quiet of these places to the uncertainty of the interior.
