Hongkong, Jan. 17.

The Colonial Treasury is shipping silver dollars by the s. Talins to Bombay to-day. The shipment is valved at $20,000,000—Reuter. opening on Thursday. During the day the market was quiet on the whole, with luetuations confined to between $1,148.30 and $1,15130.

Further, declines in the price of silver and a weak exchange market influenced heavy buying activity in the local Gold Bar market on Friday resulting in a large upward movement which terminated at $1.17240, rise of about $25 above the previous closing. The afternoon's trading, was confined to profit-taking, which caused a decline to $1,163.20, but this dree Was not without any opposition however, as speculators took advantage of every low level to accumulate more bars.

During the week-end half-day session a steady downward trend was discernible on account of a large scale profit-taking by long commitments who were nearly three times as many as the short. Opening at $1.170.20 the market declined to $1,161.80, but toward the end if advanced to $1,165.- 30 again at the closing.
