Tucked awe in what ig practically a back street, surrounded by an amazing density of population, it might seem to be a Miight hidden under a bushel." "But its: work of healing and of spiritual rear from that life of turmoil and struggle that most of its patients come from, is a monument greater than any fine building visible on a main street. 'This hospital lives in the heafs of thousands of men and women—and little children—who have known, as patients, its beneficult vorviee and whose' eyes will always gee the bright Hight of the Ikindness s0 generously given to them ere, On the first page of the report, which is in your hands, you will sec heading "Service rendered 1935"—the shining light—in statis Hieal form, of the work of the Lester Chinese Hospital, In my own offtelal work I deal with masses of statistics and have perhaps Tearned, to some extent, to see the real picture behind a lot of bald figures, On this first page then, T see the magnificent attempt in one short year to transform the suffering often the misery—of many Thousands of fellow creatures whose visits numbered almost 200,000 last year ints health and its partner—happiness, 'A Human Document He advised alt suberibers to {ike the annual report home with them and read it in extense, as it was a document teeming with human inter est. Speaking of the number of patients treated in the past year, he On the page where the "services rendered" are listed, you will see that no Tess than 193,005 outpatients were treated during 1935. On some days during the year well over 800 out-patients visited the hospital for Advice and. treatment. The orderly control and treatment of so vast a number requires n tactful and able administration. T put it to you, what would the community and the authorities do if this institution were not available to cope with this prob-Jem? The work of a hospital never stands stil, the door is always "on {he latch" and loving care and skill are in continuous supply throughout the twenty-four hours of the day.

Mr. Beale then drew a human pleture of what happened when an emergency case arose, speaking in particular of a recent shooting affray atween the police and robbers, when leven men were wounded and sent fo hospital. He also touched upon the. useful work, done by the authorities, who siw to it that patients were given something to to take. their minds off their Hinesses. Such work had a double "object, for it not only helped, patients fo get better, but also taught them a useful occupation fo practise later. fof the late Mrs. Sofia Canning. an fold and respected member of our community. It will be noted from the Balance Sheet that the amount received #0 far from this source amounts to $16,200, and I understand that a further amount will probably received during the course of the jeurrent year.

'A word about the future. I believe Tam voleing the opinion of the trustees and Committee that the current year will be another very anxious one from a financial point of view. The late Mr. Henry Lester. Jour great benefactor, left the hospital very handsome endowment in the form of various lots of property Shanghai, the rentals from which help to pay for part of the running expenses. of the hospital. The amount made {available from this source during 1935 was no less than $121,041.63, but it is greatly feared that the same amount cannot be expected during 1936. Would not dare to prophesy what the exact position will be for 1936, but I think We will have to consider ourselves fortunate if the decrease does hot exceed 25 per cent. If this estimate proves even approximately cor-feet, you will realize what a serious matier It Is for the hospital.

You cannot measure the value of the work of this hospital in terms of money. In $0 beneficent a work those engaged in it should have financial problems. Rather should we British and Chinese together—embrace the privilege of playing our part in subscribing as generously as we possibly can and thus enable the Trustees, the Committee and the staff to carry on, without financial anxiety, their great work of healing and merey. 1 Speak as a layman in hospital work, but T must record what a. great happiness it was to me, when T went over this entire building a few days go, to see on the one hand the eager @evotion and the "pride in their work" of every member of the staff, and fon the other the happiness and gratitude of the patients.
