American Vessels Arrive

With the arrival on Friday afternoon of H.M.S. Medway and five submarines, the arrival of the USS, [Black Hawk and three destroyers, and the arrival next day of six American [submarines and their depot ships and two more destroyers of the US. [Asiatic Fleet, the number of warships now in the Hobour reached the total of 38, the largest number of men-of-war to be in Shanghai in many years.

The concentration of warships in this port at the present time is in the course of the annual summer leruises of various units to the north.

The American ships, destroyers and submarines alike, will remain Shanghai until May 11, leaving one Jday ahead of the British for the north. In the course of the next three weeks Jother British vessels will arrive in Shanghai, which now is beginning to look like a naval base.

HM.S. Kent will arrive here on May 12, H.MS. Dorsetshire will arrive off Woosung on May 6, and INS, Falmouth shortly after: Brit-vessels coming to Shanghai in the month of June will include H.M.S. Grimsby, which left here on Apri 17, and H.MS. Lowestoft, which sail-on Friday for Welhaiwai from Shanghai and will return on June 8.

There will probably be a further flotilla of submarines visiting this Port in the near future but this will depend on whether the anti-piracy Patrol duties from Hongkong allow of any more submarines leaving that area. In spite of the fact that the majority of ships in the China fleet are based on Weihaiwei during the summer months, a certain number have to be retained in Hongkong for anti-piracy duties.
