The appeal by the committee of twenty-nine high Episcopalian churchmen In New York to Episcopalians throughout the United States to seek reunion with the Roman Catholic [Church is remarkable for the state ment that Protestantism was "bankrupt ethically, culturally, morally and religiously," and that a world attack against religion was under way. The committee has no particular omeial status, appoints itself and is representative of no one but itself. That is paraphrase of the comment of Bishop Cameron J. Davis, while Dr. Ivan Lee Holt," president of the [Federal Couneit of Churches of Christ America finds that the leman [Catholics were at present unable to Jmake concessions required by Protestants for union, The outburst by the twenty-nine is astonishing, end is one which will not be readily accepted millions of believers the world lover. 'That there is a xrowing desire that the churches formed as a result of schisms with Rome should eventually bbe reunited into one flock, is 9 fact which has been apparent' for some years. It fs inspired by a belief that mush of the old intolerance did harm to basle faith, and it was hoped that fas bitternesses were wiped out by the passage of time the Church might gal become one great, universal body, But it was not founded in any delict that Protestantism was utterly bankrupt as this unoMcfal committee has had the hardilied to announce, The duty of these clerics apparent. If the church to which they" belong is so completely de-Aeient of the qualities they have every right to expect of it, it is on impperalive obligation upon them te cease from Its service, and to Join some other church in which they could have greater faith. They may all be sincere worthy men, but it was surely not their duty while still adhering to the protestantism which they so roundly condemn, to deliver such an attack as has been reported. Had they resigned from their offices first and ther. made {thelr pronouncement, more importance might have been attached to it. As Its, the appeal will be more. likely to do harm to the moveniont for 1¢- union than assist it to any rear de-ree.
