Presents From All Over China

Yet every single oMelal in Peiping hastened to attend the ceremony. while congratulations and presents poured in from every part of China, There was even a congratulatory scroll from the Generalissimo himself, not to mention a valuable screen inlaid with jade, said to have cost over $90,000, which was presented by three stalwarts of the Kuomin-fang: Dr, Wang Chung-hui, Mr. Li Shih-tseng and Miss Sou Mel-cheng.

Although the Chinese press devoted whole pages to a detailed descrip-lon of these "high Jinks," It must be said that among the general pub-Hie this lavish display universally was condemned. People considered it unsuitable at the present time, seeing the economic and political dif-culties of the country. And the fact was much commented on that not one of the high offers or generals of the 20th Division—other than the "political generals"—attonded the function or sent their congratulations. On the other hand the Japanese Legation and military turned up in force which will have consoled Gen. Hsizo. This birthday party is not without its deeper significance for those who have been following what has been going on behind the scenes.
