In collaboration with the Municipal Symphony Orchestra, Mishel Piastro and Joseph Schuster made their second appearance at the Nanking Theatre last night. The orchestra opened the programme with the "Anacreon" Overture by Cherubini Which they played in fine style and finish.
Mr, Schuster's interpretation of ihe Haydn Cello "Concerto in D Major" was smooth and his tone was warm. He did interesting things with tempi, using rather more rubato than is usually done but with such skill that the result was very gratifying.
The Tschaikowsky Wiolin "Con-cerro in D" received a wonderful reading by Piastro, It was filled with brilliance and glow. There was a breadth and sweep which was thrilling: The frst movement in particular had marvelous scope and beauty.
For the second part of the programme the Brshms Double Concerto for Violin, Cello and Orchestra was played. It is a composition seldom heard which is a pity because it is so entirely lovely. It would be dificult to find two artists more perfectly balanced than these two er with a greater similarity in understanding and interpretation. The result was a profound performance.
The audience was most appreciative and responsive and were rewarded with an encore which will stand out in the memories of every One present as a perfect gem. They played the Handel "Passacaglia" without accompaniment. N was finished to an unbelievable degree) with the most exquisite shading pos ible and flawless phrasing.—o.w.
