Scotstoun, Glasgow have just secured an order for a large shallow draft river steamer for the Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Ca. for service on the Yangtze between Ichang.and Chungking where the navigation is rendered both difficult and dangerous by the many whirlpools and rapids that have to be encountered.
The vessel which will be of the Yarrow type is specially designed for this service for carrying oil fuel in bulk. The propelling machinery will consist of two sets of triple expansion engines developing a total power of about 8,000, steam being supplied by two of the latest type of Yarrow patent water-tube boilers suitable for oil burning.
The design of this steamer will follow very closely the large number of River gunboats built by Messrs. Yarrow for the British Admiralty during the war, the whole flotilla of which was designed and built by them and for which they took the responsibility.
