Montreal, June 22.
The results of the provincial election in British Columbia were much more decisive than was general! expected. Out of the welter of candidates—in some cases there were four or five contesting a seat—the Liberals under the leadership of Premier Pattullo elected 3f and secured a majority over all. Of the other groups eight Conservatives, seven C.C.F. one Labour and one Independent were elected. The result leaves the political situation practically unchanged, and certainly proved to be a disappointment to the Social Credit group, who thought that they had a large following.
At the same time as the election took place there was a plebiscite on the question of the Governments health insurance scheme, which had met with considerable opposition [from the medical profession. As a result, the Government was given full authority by the voters to go ahead with a comprehensive plan for wage earners.
The political situation in Alberta is becoming more difficult with each passing month. Premier Aberhart and his Social Credit Government are still in control, and appear to have a certain measure of support. They are rather delaying any new policies until the arrival of one of more advisors, who are to assist in applying the principles of Major Douglas. Al-terra is becoming most unpopular in the investment centres, as interest payments are still being passed up. No success has been attained by the Government in trying to reach an understanding with Ottawa by which some funds would be advanced to cover the bond interest as it falls due The Federal Government feels that it is wiser at the, moment to withhold aid.
