Rival "Victories" Broadcast in Hongkew The exodus of Chapei residents continued yesterday and last night, although on a slightly smaller scale than on Wednesday. Many refugees, entering the Settlement at Paoshan and Boundary Roads, reached the area south of Soochow Creek after proceeding along Range Road owing to repairs in North Honan Road. As on previous days, vehicles ranging from bulky removal vans to rickshaws and hand-trucks were used. There was a heavy movement across the Thibet Road bridge into Vu Ya Ching Road.
There was a notable absence of excited feeling in both Chapei and Hongkew. Reports of the Northern fighting continued to be broadcast by means of posters and newspaper extras. Chinese groups could be seen reading the reports with avidity and in Woosung Road and other Hongkew streets largely inhabited by Japanese, special posters announced Japanese' victories to the Japanese population. All remained calm, however.
Japanese naval patrols were still much in evidence, and Japanese bluejackets were seen on leave in the area in large numbers.
