Plans for the dredging and improvement of the Soochow Creel 30 as to facilitate communications on this waterway between Soochow and Shanghai, are being made by: the Whangpoo River Conservancy Bureau.
The conservancy of the entire] Jcourse of the Creek is estimated at '$1,000,000. It is understood that survey of part of the River has already been completed and as soon permission has been obtained from the National Reconstruction Commission—such matters belong to the development of inlard shipping'—aetual engineering work will be started.
The improvement of the Soochow Creek is generally welcomed as. most of the food products from Soo chow are transported here by this route on Chinese vessels. It is cal-colated that about 1,000,000 inhabitants along the banks are dependent upon the creek for their livelihood.
