On September 2, we read from the Chinese newspapers, the hotel and cafe. proprietors of Nanking were chrown into a state of constert tion when police officers came notified them that permission, which had been granted for the opening of dance halls, had been withdrawn and that this order was to be observed immediately.
Since Nanking became the national capital of China, dancing has ecome very popular with the society leaders and not a member of the smart set did not know the latest steps in the Fox Trot, the Tango, the One-step and the Waltz, Indeed, 20 popular did it become that, even the wives of some of the elderly oficial were seen in company with the concubines of the younger ones on the floor. Gen. Liu Chi-wen was Mayor of Nanking when the Gov-ferment was established and, as he was a member of the younger class, itis not surprising that he received, and granted, many applications for Permission to establish dance halls Nithin the walls of this venerable old city.
But Lia has gone. A new Mayor has come. On August 29, the authorities of Nanking were appro fed on the subject and they gave Vertal permission for the dance halls to continue to do business. And then the hitch came. Over the head of the Nanking municipality came an order from the National Government itself. The passengers who realized what was happening noticed that the brakes were applied and released five times in an effort stop the train gradually, with the result that when the locomotive and baggage car patted company speed had been greatly reduced, A few seconds later the engineer, who by keeping his wits oont hin had doubtless saved many lives, was himself dead. He must have been Killed instantly when the locoinos tive fell over sideways, while the fireman in the cab was scalded to death from the escaping steam, It was some time before the latter's body was extricated from the wreck, 'A guard was also badly scalded, The steam cocks in the engine were broken as the result of the locomotive falling over, and steam shot out for ever 59 feet, This was fortunate, a3 otherwise there would have been an explosion.
As far as could be ascertained, no passengers lost their lives ale though several suffered from cuts and braises, The cars were of steel throughout, and dd not buckle all.
Fortunately the accident oecurred near a wayside station, and it was possible to get a message through to Chang-te immediately. Within 1 hours the breakdown train had arrived, and it was not very long before they had zat all wreckage clear of the line and fixe up the rails s> that the two maining cars could be taken past. These two were coupled to a spare engine Urought from Chang-te and the train proceeded, All the passengers crowded ints the two cars, irrespective of classy and were soon bowling on towards Chang.te.
