During the early days of the present catastrophe the hoardings struck a note of irony as they unavailingly invited passers by to see "Thunder in the City" at the Metropol. More poignant still was the closed Nanking Theatre with the name of its last film "Smiling Through," displayed a few yards away from the scene of the terrible bomb holocaust. Now both theatres are making their contribution to the restoration of routine by re-opening, the Nanking with the film which the Metropol promised but could not show owing to its closure and the Metropol with a new cinema expounding the comic philosophy of that popular but highly peculiar comedian Joe E. Brown. With Loretta Young in her buoyant vein at the Cathay and Fred McMurray at the Grand, cinema audiences have a good choice for their entertainment. A further sign of social activity is to be discerned in the decision to open the Tower at the Cathay Hotel. That intimate place of restful amusement is having a good send-off for to-morrow night the grill room will be closed and diners at the Cathay will be served with the meal they require up aloft in the Tower where Mr. Eric de Reynier is to preside at the piano and Mr. Joseph Ullstein's music will delight.
