News from China to the West

To the Editor of the "NonrH-CHINA DatLy News'

Sir—During the past week T have received copies of the "Times" up to Jum 12, and I think the thanks of the foreign community here are due to the Shanghai and Peking correspondents of that paper for the very accurate and unbiassed reports they have telegraphed to London of recent local happenings and of the present conditions in China. These Feports shoud go a long way correct the grossly misleading: ntatements that have been cabled home by persons and bodies in whose edu ceation "the word "truth" and its meaning appear to have been omitted." Equally commendable are. the, abled to certain prominent newspapers in America, We moi also be grateful to such men an Si John Jordan, General C.D. Bruc Mecnrs. H. G. Simms, W. E. Sooth: il, W. T. A. Barber, and Gilbert G. Warren for coming forward ich a time to state publicly their! experience of iChinose conditions. Lenelose Mr. Warren's letter, and you will see what he states regarding' Jabour conditions in China, and how! "law" and "justice" are administer. ed in this country outside the Trea ty Ports, and what abolition of ex tra territoriality" would seem to foreigners in China.

Knowing what we do of the happenings in China during the past few weeks, and after reading the accounts and letters referred to Dove, it makes one tick to read the absurd, ignorant, and grossly. mise Jeading statements made in the House of Commons and elsewhere bby members of the Labour Party and others. For instance, on June 9 Mr. Pethwick Lawrence asked. the Government "whether the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs wus con-recent firing took in China?" Could one imagine pid or childish question? And this from man who is. sup-cued to be sane, and who repre-tents in the House of Commons the he often held up to T also eric! graphed to New York by professors of the National University of Peking, and would call your attention to the deliberately false statements contained therein. According to the professors the marksmanship of the: Shanghai Police and Volunteers quires attending to. Fancy shoot for six continuous days and only Killing 70 persons Tam, ete, 4H. P. King,
