SHANGHATS ORDEAL

On Oct, 14—the date seems to be significant—Shanghai had a further taste of the tragic tribulations to which civilians pre exposed when contending armies are fighting on the doorstep of a great city. The casualty list was distressingly high and the range of disaster was wide, stretching as it did from the Central District to the extra-Settlement area in Hungjao Road and to the Settlement prea in Chungping Road near Soochow Creek, as well as to the Hongkew and Yangtszepoo districts. Even Szechuen Road had its visitation. Early in the morning of Oct. 15 a shell pierced the roof of the ballroom of the British Country Club, but fortunately at that hour the members were not engaged in their usual enjoyment of the institution's amenities. The emergencies arising from this widespread havoc were efficiently dealt with by the police, fire brigade and ambulance services, Shanghai maintained its customary calm allied to alertness in giving aid to the victims of misfortune.
