Municipal Orchestra a Criticism

To the Editor of the "NonrH-CuiNA Dany News."

Sm,—So long as the orchestra gets the continuous flattery of your musical critics, programmes such as yesterday's will obviously be continued. Had the criticism of Sunday's concert

of the audience it would have read era by an average member i first half good, second half quire to be reminded that the Orchestra is kept up at great expense by the ratepayers, and that it is for ihe special entertainment of the general public and not for the amusement of himself and a small coterie of experts. What the public wants is "musie" and not "Catholic ecclesias tical modality"—your entice knows best what this latter phrase means. The inattention of the audience towards the end of the concert and the rows of empty seats bore mute testi-many to the utter failure of the Band Committee's present policy to fulfil their trust to the ratepayers.

There is so much grand and inspire ing music that will stand endless repetition, especially when played by a first-class orchestra such as ours undoubtedly is. In these anxious days we require the, solace and comfort of music more than ever, Shanghai, Oct. 25.
