It appears that the reluctance of certain British shipping companies to restore Shanghai to the programme of their liners is due to diffidence at headquarters rather than to any specific inhibitions here. The spectacle of French, Italian and other ships regularly using the safe anchorage at Woosung suggests that that dim dence is overdone, especially when regard is paid to the admirable services of the coastal steamers and certain other British and American vessels which have penetrated as far as the Bund. The arrival of the Bhutan at the Gough Island mooring prompts the belief that London and Montreal may before long be seized of the importance of permitting Shanghai or at any rate Woosung to behold once more the comforting lines of their graceful vessels lest their memories begin to rank with Dreamland Faces of a bygone age.
