To the Japanese, General Nog', the hero of Port Arthur, was the personification of everything that a man should be—fearless of danger, self-sacrificing, simple-living, stoical, and generous—and loyal, even to the point of taking his life in order to follow his Emperor into the next world, To all intents and purposes Nogi has been deified, and the shrine erected to his memory in the garden outside the house in which he made the last great sacrifice draws hundreds of devoted pilgrims yearly.
