Fos Aca OWN CORRESPONDENT Long: Beach

1 am writing from Long Beach, fa paradise by the sea in Southern California. "There are two kinds people in the United States says the Long Beacher, levelling in almost perfect climate, "those Who Tive here and those who want to." And to great extent he is right, for there are few places on this Planet where men_may work and play under better conditions.

Twenty-five years ago Long Beach's 664 people wondered why, with all her" natural advantages, the Htle village did not attract more people to come here to live, During the next decade it managed te build up the census to something Tike 2,000. By 1920 there were 56,000" people living here; three years later this figure was doubl la; at the present time the popula tion {fs about 160,000, and it is fast growing, There must be a reason for this remarkably quick growth. "has been due to no boom. Tt has been steady, and now the Long Beacher will take you to the waterfront. and point out to you where the city" will make_its harbour to meet with that of San Pedro, near cly. He will paint a picture of foreign trade' development, and claim that what Los Angeles has dione Long Beach can and, will do, for she has a source of wealth eclipsed by no other city of its size the whole of the United States.

Up to last October this city ree ceived something like $34 million from. oil" revenues—the famous Signal" Hill is here, of course, There is nothing like it in the history of any other community in the country. This all revenue now averages $110,000 yer month, and new wells are being constantly Drought in, The city's assessed valuation "has grown "from $12,- 484,595 in 1906 to. $176,802,574 in 1025, T question whether there another city of a similar population in the world that has that record.

Taxes are Tevied on about 4 per cent. of valuation, but really less, tind' with one exception, they are ower than any city of its size oF larger in California,
