The big surprise of the week-end in homeside football was the defeat of the Second Division leaders Coventry at home by Sheffield Wednesday, one of the cellar teams of the division. Coventry, prior to this game, were the only undefeated side in the English Leagues, and they lost two records as the result of their defeat by Billy Walker's boys: that of being undefeated, and of being undefeated at home at the same time. Those fans who do not believe in upsets should ponder over this result.
Portsmouth, who had failed to record one win in fifteen games have at last won at home. Derby County, with a forward line composed of International players is the first team that has failed to penetrate the Pompey defence this season.
Arsenal inflicted another home defeat on Charlton, which will make Jimmy Seed ponder on the question of obtaining new players. Birmingham remain undefeated at home, their victims being Wolverhampton, Liverpool smashed the home ground records of Sunderland and Manchester City recently; this week they went down at home to Huddersfield.
Brentford retain the leadership as the result of a narrow away win over Grimsby. Chelsea managed to retain one point in their home game against the champions.
Manchester United, who have recently figured in the transfer market, defeated Aston Villa who drop to fifth place, Sheffield United taking second place, defeating Bradford who are also slipping.
