One amusing incident that occurred during the time, although the humorous side was not apparent Just at the moment, was thet a municipal coolie happened to be engaged cleaning one of the tail standard road lamps when the crowds suddenly appeared and commenced the trouble. The coolie was in' no wise concerned but remained in his place, slung on a leather strap for some two hours, alternately watching the crowd below him and dusting the bulbs, although fis interest it was noted seemed more with the concession's electrical fitments.
Daricg all the demonstrations in the concessions both on Monday and the following day it was apparent, s0 this lady from Hankow said, that there were Russians behind the At Kiukiang eggs.and-suck farm produce was taken on and there' was plenty of food, tke butter, only..being a little short.. The- service of, the Chinese staff was splendid.
Calls were made at Wahu, where looting has been taking place among the Chinese shops, but no passengers were taken on; and at Chinkiang and Nanking, 'a few mission: disembarking' at Chinkiang and cargo being discharged at both.
Although there -was no. excitement on the way, or very little, except at Kiukiang, it took" a long. time to.reach Shanghai, the boat being due in on Friday, and the longing to reach some place of tk: safety where there were no trouble, a9 yet at any rate, must have made the days seem longer still,
