The "get rich quick" scheme of public bath house attendant and a hotel servant were nipped in the bud fon May 18 when they accepted a $20 4ift from a Chinese detective as part of their spoil. The two men were lodging ina small hotel in Avenue Edward VI, and issued invitations to 'a number of Chinese permanent resi-lents to attend a wedding of the nephew of the proprietor of the New World amusement centre, The suspi-dons of one of the recipients of these invitations were aroused as the venue of the ceremony was searcely thought to be in keeping with the attendant's position.

'A detective from the Settlement police was sent as a messenger with a '$20 cash present to the room where the ceremony was supposed to be staged. After accepting the gift, the two men gave the detective a $2 commission, in accordance with Chinese custom. The detective thereupon made known his identity, and put the two men under arrest, As the hotel is situated in the French Concession, the men were handed over to the French Police. Tt was afterwards discovered that one of the permanent residents had responded to the invitation with a $20 gift.
