Two Japanese newspapermen engaged in "covering" the capture of Wusih for leading Tokyo dailies met death near its walls yesterday.
The killed men were: Mr. Mineo Watanabe, war correspondent of the "Yomiuri," who met death at 12.30 o'clock in the afternoon; and Mr. Koh Mayeda, a cameraman for the "Tokyo Asahi," who was killed at 1.30 o'clock in the afternoon.
Both men were regarded by their colleagues and rivals in Shanghai as the most daring representatives of the Fourth Estate, having made a habit of travelling about with the advance guard of the Japanese units at the front.
The killed newspapermen will be enshrined at Tokyo's famous Yasukuni Shrine, as their official designation as war correspondents entitle them to equal treatment with men called to the colours,
