Szechuen Arming Herself

Populace Generally Fears Japanese Invasion — MERCHANTS BEGIN TO STUDY PROBLEMS From A CORRESPONDENT

(Delayed in Transit)

Szechuen, Nov. 20.

Some of the 65,000,000 people in this large province are beginning to realize Nippon's desire to localize her many incidents and that dugouts are the order of the day in different parts of the province, The long tale of bombs has already reached West China so the people of Szechuen are leaving nothing to chance. As the people in this large province understand the term, Japonism is synonymous with something more cinel, wicked, barbarous and outrageous than anything yet perpetrated in the history of warfare. The inhabitants or non-combatants in Szechuen are not prepared to risk their lives with a Nipponese bomber overhead. So if the small city has only four gates the wise inhabitants thereof are constructing an additional four; and if the city has eight gates the dwellers therein are opening another eight. Non-combatants with Japanese bombers overhead want a way of escape.

West China is not so very far away irom the seat of war and she has gained a very bad impression of her friendly neighbour's brotherly kindness and her careful and judicious bombing of strategic, and military points! Having radio and the press the inhabitants of this large province are keenly alive to what is taking place day by day in the Republic und in the world at large, The cruel laughter of the Japanese warlords is penetrating the ears of the inhabitants of West China and they wonder if men like Anthony Eden are aware of its extent, It is a long time since the words were spoken advising men to be as wise as serpents and as harmless as doves, Yet men in public affairs to-day have about them a dove-like charm which they are cautiously using on the serpents with very little effect. And the people here ask how long this folly is going to last
