Sin—Referring to Mr. Lierre He's letter of June 9, I consider the mistake of the intrusive "R" should be pointed out and corrected in schools of the Southern and Midland coun-les of England, where it is prevalent, but not necessarily in classes of non British pupils. The larier, when they fre learning English, need first and foremost to understand the language and express themselves intelligibly in it—@ goal often lost "sight of, especially in the East: either the teachers go astray "by harping on minor points dinned into them. by. Purists, or the students themselves Prefer to display a knowledge of Shakespeare and the subjunctive before they con write a simple sentence Properly. However, advanced students, like Mr, Lierre Ko, who notice these things, should be warned that ven Englishmen make mistakes and that "drawing",. "garn", and "méoky pldogs", are incorrect.

smi have followed closely the teliers In sour columns on some ce {foversat points on" English prohnunelation. What arouses my interest-most is the question of the Intrusive "R" (the insertion of "R' sound between "idea" and "of" for Instance), the existence of which is confirmed by Mr. Henrz Kx but denied by Me. 1, Mann.
'Indeed' the fact that the intrusive "does exist _among. some English speakers should no more prove to be dubious to Mr, Man, Mr. Ko having referred "him to Jones! "Pronouncing Dictionary," the most authoritative work on English pronunciation ever produced in England. However, Mr, Maxw has failed, as he mentions. in his letter appearing Ko, and thus bby' the latter's arguments. Well, the copy of Jones' "Pronouncing Dictionary" which Mr. Manx has at hand Is "incomplete," T suggest he goto "complete" one and read Section XIV on T-Linking in "Explanations" to find whether he can be convinced this time. If he still finds himself not satisfied, T may refer him to Section 74 of "The Pronunciation of English," another authoritative work of Mr. Jones.
Since the Intrusive "R" exists in the speech of only a small number of English people, Bnglish teachers of course should not recommend such pronunciation to their pupils, more especially Chinese pupils. "It should not even be pointed out to junior grade students so that they may not be perplexed.
