The Far East is, in fact, one of the two potential storm 26 centres of the world, the other being Central Europe, and Commander Yshimaru divides his book equally between them, realizing the close political inter-relationship between the {wo areas, through the connect ing links of Great Britain and Russia, His views as to past problems. of the Far East, such as the occupation of Manchuria, and the abortive Lon-Gon Naval Disarmament Conference of 1035, run on "oficial" Japanese Tines, but he presents the Japanese case fully and often with considerable skill. "His opinions on the present situation and future developments are more open. Thus he appreciates Russia's legitimate fears for her Far Eastern Provinces, and hho recognizes that Chinese hostility has been one of the less desirable articles "made in Japan." But, per= haps Inevitably, the background st often that of en amicable and amiable Japan, surrounded by pre-datary and necessarily hostile foreign potions.
