International schemes for rubber, sugar and tin, Mr. Ormsby-Gore declared, could not continue a day without ce-operation between Britain and the Netherlands.
Sir Cecil Clementi, former Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Straits Settlements and High Commissioner for Malaya, endorsed Mr. Ormsby-Gore's suggestion, and said that he hoped officials of the Netherlands East Indies would go to Malaya and that British officials would return the visit.
Referring to the Far East, Sir Cecil Clementi declared that the situation bad never been more hazardous. It was most necessary that Europe and America should stand together.
He agreed with a recent statement müde by Sir Francis Lindley, former British Ambassador to Japan, that when the present warfare between China and Japan was over, there was very likely to be @ rapprochement and the cry of "Asia for the Asiatics" would grow more vehement.
Therefore, Sir Cecil Clementi concluded, Europe and America must cooperate and must see that no "Pa Asiatic fanatic" run the risk of attacking them. They must stand together to secure their possessions in the Far East.
Sir Cecil Clementi was Governor of Hongkong from 1925 to 1980.—Reuter,
