Huge Number of Postal Orders Sold in 1937

290 Tons of Paper Required for Their Manufacture London, Jan. 22.

Last year the Post Office sold 344,000,000 postal money orders to the value of £89,000,000, Over 290 tons of specially made paper were required for their manufacture, These figures are revealed in a Post Office publication describing the growth of the postal order service from its inception at the beginning of 1881 and the great Organization within the Post Office which to-day handles the postal order business.

One problem which was not solved till 1908 was the tedious and monotonous process of hand sorting the enormous quantities of postal orders after payment. Post Office officials themselves invented the system of code perforations and machine which sorts orders by means of these per-formations, Fourteen of these machines are now in daily use, each dealing with an average of' 12000 postal orders an hour,—Wireless through Reuter.
