The Japanese casualties since the beginning of the crisis are placed at approximately twenty killed and sixty wounded, These figures include two soldiers killed near Huangtsun yesterday, when a Japanese patrol brushed with Chinese troops.
In an interview this morning, Major Imai, the Japanese Military Attache, alleged that the Chinese troops enforcing martial law in Peiping had "brutally manhandled a large number of Japanese subjects."
He had made representations to the Chinese authorities, which had resulted in an improvement in the situation, but the Japanese were still very nervous.
About 250 Japanese subjects, most of them Korean women and children, have so far evacuated Peiping of their own volition.
Major Imai declined to give information of the movements of Central Government troops beyond saying that some had been observed along the Peiping-Hankow Railway. When questioned on the scope of the negotiations in Tientsin, he said he had not been informed.—Reuter.
