The party collect~ fed, however, "about two thousand smaller mammals, so in the matter of results it was' highly successful. Some of them were unfortunately destroyed when the camp burned, Dut in spite of these losses the National Research Society of Nan-King has benefited by the acquisition of some valuable specimens, Mr. Smith is taking back with him to Chicago about a thousand specimens of these same smaller animals, Working with two taxidermists, a photographer, a newspaperman, and 'a young student, Mx. The deer, for ex+ ample, is preyed on by so many larger animals that it often is afraid to lower its head for a drink, This absolute freedom from apprehension' has already made itself noticeable in the ease of the pandas, who oft it second day in the zoo seemed quite contented, and even tame, to {those who watched them. taste for bamboo, they ha developed a fondness for a mixture fof bread and rice, a diet on vhich they give every indication of thriving.
