Panic in Village

In the high forested mountains of West Shansi tigers are still to be met with. Only a few years ago one of these animals actually came down from the mountains of south-west Shansi and, entering a village, created a panic amongst the inhabitants. It was driven into a dwelling, where it was shot by some local Nimrods, its body being exhibited for several days in the streets. Some years ago, when travelling in Kansu, the writer was informed by local Chinese hunters that tigers occurred in the great Lu-pan Shan range, which runs from north to south through thay pray ince. He also heard of them in the mountains in south-western Kansu on the Tibetan border and in the Tsing-ling range which runs from west to east through southern Shensi into western Honan.

Even in the mountains of southern Shantung and northern Anhwei and Kiangsu the tiger is reported to occur, and who has not heard of the famous "Kuling Tiger," which, while believed by many to be a pure myth, undoubtedly has its origin in the genuine occurrence of one of these animals in that mountain resort immediately south of the Yangtze near Kiukiang, at some past time within the memory of man, for the Lu Shan are within the known range of the tiger in Central China.
