FOR ST. TICHON'S

Following the example of recent years a group of well-known Shanghai women under the presidency of Lady Maze is preparing to raise funds for St. Tiehen's Orphanage. Unlike on previous Occasions those responsible do not contemplate holding a ball because of the continuance of curfew, but they propose holding a the dansant at the Cercle Sportif Francais on March 4, tickets for which will be sold at $3 each. The work of St. Tichon's Orphanage is already well known to a large number of people in Shanghai, and it should be pointed out that the institution cares for no fewer than 140 orphans, who but for the orphanage might be completely destitute. It must be realized from the statements of account that are periodically published in the columns of this journal, that St. Tichon's lives a hand-to-mouth existence and that funds are always necessary, especially in times such as these when the cost of living has increased. It is because they realize the excellence of the work which is being done that this group of Shanghai women are so energetically making preparations to ensure the success of the function which they are now arranging. They in turn look confidently to Shanghai for support in their charitable activities, and knowing Shanghai as this journal does, it has no doubt that the necessary assistance will be provided by the purchase of tickets, It is hoped that the affair will be a brilliant social success, and thai Shanghai by turning out in strength will again prove to the world the great charity of its people, even after the gallant manner in which they have already responded to the many appeals made upon them.
