Four Chinese residing in Yue Ching alleyway. off North Szechuen Road, were detained at the Bureau of Police in Nantao yesterday on charges of assaulting Chinese' Police.
The dispute arose on Thursday night when Constable Chow Feng-po stationed near the alleyway, advis some residents not to move their furniture away in the evening. This was said to have led to heated arguments during which the policeman was surrounded by a menacing crowd.
An alarm by the policeman brought another constable to the scene. The latter likewise was surrounded and attacked by the crowd. In the fracas, a service pistol was snatched away from one ofthe policemen.
When eight additional policemen went to their comrades' aid, the particupants fled. The pistol was recovered at a street corner. In a subsequent investigation conducted by the police, four residents including Cheng Shih-siao, secretary of a silk weavers' union, were arrested.
