EDWIN HOWARD

Another Tribute

To the Editor of the "Norra-Cimwa Dany News"

Smm,—There will be many residents of Shanghai, not only members of the British community, who will join with you in regretting that considerations of health have obliged Mr. Howard to resign the editorship of the "North-China Daily News." The generous references in your editorial to-day to the good work and personal qualities of your colleague leave little to be said, but I feel that those who have some knowledge of the self-sacrificing efforts he made to increase the prestige and influence of the paper will wish to add their tribute to your's, It will, I think, not be out of place to add' that, in the considerable responsibility he was called upon to shoulder during the difficult years of his editorship, Mr, Howard could count upon wise counsel, sympathy and encouragement from an under-fanding wife. On the night of "Black Saturday," when Shanghai was stunned and aghast at the bombing tragedies of Nanking Road and Avenue Edward VII, I remember receiving a telephone call from Howard at his office on the Bund, not a very healthy spot at that time. He had set out for his office from his home in Avenue Haig to put the finishing touches to his work for the day, and his wife had insisted on accompanying him. On the way, as the result of the exuberance of a reckless motorist, his wife was involved in a nasty accident, and sustained injuries that necessitated an immediate visit to the Country Hospital. On account of the day's tragedies no taxi-cabs were on the streets, so I offered to fetch Howard home in my car. The streets were dark and deserted, and I had almost a clear run to the Bund, where I found Howard in his office carrying on as if nothing unusual had happened that day. In an adjoining room was his wife, who after having her several wounds dressed at the hospital, had insisted upon completing the journey she had undertaken, Both, Mr, and Mr, Howard will be missed' by many friends in Shanghai, but they may be assured of our heartiest good wishes for their health and happiness wherever they may
