Portugal Defeated

De Senna and da Silva, representing Portugal, then met Kew and Eardley (Australia) for the Whally Shield. This was rather a one-sided affair the holders, Portugal, being more or less overwhelmed with scores of 15-8 and 15-6.

Da Silva was by no means on his form. He plays a very strong game and this, coupled with the fact that the shuttles appeared to be faster than usual or, more probably, faster than he is accustomed to, resulted in a great many of his clearing shots landing out of the court. He was also quite off his smashing. De Senna played a number of winning shots at the net and a sound game-in general. Also, quite a number of faulty services prevented the Portuguese from scoring.
