Looting Spreads in Pootung

Household Goods Taken as Well as Cargo from Godowns Looting in Pootung is continuing to flourish. It has reached the stage where people have deserted their homes, leaving the front door open. Fortune hunters are merely walking in and helping themselves to whatever strikes their fancy and making off with it.

Most of the looters are trying to cross the Whangpoo River with their newly-acquired goods in the various launches. sampans, and tenders, but a large proportion of them at least are arrested by the Shanghai River Police who, while confined to a narrow stretch of the river these days, are still active wherever possible.

In the last few days the Pootung looting situation has changed considerably. Previously, the looters were found with their hands full of goods stolen from godowns and mills, rolls of raw silk being the chief plunder. But now the looters are being caught with all kinds of household goods as well, owing to the increasing scope for theft.
