Japanese Cavalry Ambushed

Peiping, Sept. 6.

Foreign observers, returning from Mentoukou, reported that a Japanese cavalry detachment had been ambushed and had suffered heavy losses in the valley west of Mentoukuo on Friday. The ambush had been engineered by a guerilla force estimated at more than 5,000, backed by 4,000 well-equipped Nanking soldiers, apparently from Nankow.

The appearance of such large forces surprised even the mountaineers of Mentoukuo. It was understood that the Japanese were taking all neces sary measures to strengthen their forces—United Press.
