San Pedro, Sept. 9.
Twenty-five members of the crew of the Norwegian freighter John Knutsen refused to sail for Yokohama to-day and began a sit-down strike. It was believed that the strikers were without food and that friends were trying to smuggle supplies aboard. Previously, the owners cons sented to pay the $250 bonus asked by the Maritime Commission for each seaman proceeding to the zone of Sino-Japanese hostilities, but the crew later decided they did not want to sail, even with the bonus. The owners refused to pay off the men, pointing out that ships articles specify pay-off only in the event of the declaration of war.—United Press.
