Two minutes later, England countered this punch with a stiff one of their own, and by scoring their first and, as it proved, only try made the score read nine points all. A breakaway by Giles started the move. Reynolds improved matters with a sharp burst and Candler carried on and sent Unwin racing for the line. Unwin, full of determination, could not avoid being brought to earth, but he was not properly stopped and was allowed to make a second and successful dive for the line. Parker went near, but not near enough, with his place-kick. Still, Scotland had something even more dramatic up their sleeve in the form of a magnificent try by Shaw. Scotland had heeled, but were being rushed when Shaw picked up at the toes of the English forwards and shot away on the short side of the scrummage, gathering such pace that the defence was left standing still. Shaw run 35 yards swiftly. but with a perfect rein on himself in rounding Parker. Crawfords accurate place-kick was just beaten by the wind, but the honours clearly belonged to Scotland when half-time came with the score at 12—9 in their favour.
