The Rescued Rickard

In a city of graft and speculation Mike worked quietly, but always efficiently. It wag cash put up by Mike Jacobs that enabled Tex Rickard to go through with the Dempsey-Carpentier fight.

Tt was Jacobs who many times came to the rescue when a Richard show proved a flop.

The ticket speculator financed the promoter, but was never before the curtain to take his bow when the show was over. He stayed in the wings and smiled at it all He has a beautiful home at Red-bank, a high-class part of New Jersey, where tired bankers and big business men from New York go to live, He dismisses with a brief wave of the hand the fact that he has just arranged with Madison Square Garden Incorporated to pay them what will amount to the sum of 365,000 dollars (£73,000) for two years, but goes all enthusiastic when he tells his audience that the "six thousand tulips I had in my big garden were a wonderful sight, gee, while the aeroplanes swooped down taking pictures which were in the big magazines."

Here is a word picture of Mike. Nearly feet tall, bald, deep-set, piercing, yet at times twinkling eyes that look you through and through, a longish, pendulous nose that twitches like a setter's when the word business crops up, that quivers bul-borisly when he laughs inwardly as he usually does, reluctant to talk about any big things he has done, but tickled to death if you listen while he tells you of some device he has invented to kill slugs or green fly.

A big man who has long been a power behind American boxing. Now he is out front he may) come to England. Watch out for him
